Sometime this summer (or fall), we are going to be in the market for a four-wheel-drive something. I say "something", because we'd really like an old pickup truck. It would come in really handy for hauling stuff and general odd jobs we do such as landscaping and yard work during the summer. Right now, we are always having to borrow someone else's truck and that's annoying.

However, for some reason, people around here think trucks are worth their weight in gold. SUVs can be had a lot cheaper. 200,000 mile Ranger with a blown headgasket, $3,000. 150,000 mile Explorer with no major issues? $2,000. No joke. That's how it goes around here, time and time again. It's really weird.

So, if I find a good deal on an old 4x4 SUV, that'd be fine too. I'd end up using it as a truck and hauling lawn mowers, mulch, wife's craft projects, bicycles, etc. anyway.

Condition doesn't bother me. I just don't want anything with major issues such as a metric ton of rust or anything.

I really want a Mazda B-Series, because Mazda-badged Ford Ranger. But they're super rare around here.

Either way, I want whatever we get to be a 4x4 so I can handle the gigantic snowfalls Kentucky seems to get a lot now. Our FWD CX-5 can handle them okay, but I'd rather have a beater truck for that so if an idiot runs into us, I won't have to be too upset.

What does Oppo recommend? Silverado/Sierra? Often too expensive. Ranger/B-Series? Headgasket issues, or so I have heard. S-10/Blazer? 4WD issues, also so I have heard. I am not an expert on any of this since I've always been more of a car guy than a truck guy. Anything old and in my price range (under $4,000) will have problems, but I am of course looking for as few issues as possible.

Where do you live? I've thought about an old Toyota Pickup (unlike the Tacoma, it was a Hilux sold in the U.S. w/o the diesel option) they're capable, effiecient and have incredibly reliable and cheap to fix drivetrains. The only issue is that I live in the northeast where rust is a major issue and these trucks happen to be very prone to rusting, but if you live somewhere other than the rustbelt or northeast and can find a relatively rust free example in you price range, I'd say jump on it.

I live in western Kentucky. Rust is hit and miss. We get snow, but historically not a whole lot (this past year excluded). But they also fall into the overpriced truck range. There's an '89 close to my grandma's house that has rust and like 300,000 miles and they want $5,000 for it.

yea, I've noticed the prices are all over the place, I've seen some decent ones with upeer 100k's and an asking of 3-4k, assuming they could be talked down not a bad deal, but I've also seen plenty where the sellers are asking complete crackpipe prices, sounds like thats what your grandmas neighbors doing.

A Silverado/Sierra in that price range will either have a blown transmission or a ticking timebomb of a transmission. I'd go Ranger. Pre-OHC Ranger's are damn near un-killable. Those and Toyota's of older vintage are about on the same playing field. Also, while the 2nd gen 4Runner has head gasket issues, you can get them for super cheap. Mine has been down for less than 2 weeks in 3 and a half years.

What year Rangers are pre-OHC? I'm assuming the OHC engine is the one with the headgasket issues?

They swapped over in 1998 on the 4.0, but from what I can see, the gasket issues were more prevalent on the 3.0.
